The install matters as much as the equipment

Every major brand makes good equipment. What separates a system that runs quietly for 15+ years from one that struggles every August is usually the installation: correct sizing, a proper refrigerant charge, good airflow, and ductwork that actually delivers the air where you need it.

That's where we focus. Before we recommend anything, we look at your whole home, not just the old unit on the side of the house. Then we give you clear options at different price points and explain the trade-offs in plain language. No pressure, no "today-only" pricing.

When it's time for a new air conditioner

  • Your system is 12-15 years old or more and needs a major repair
  • It uses R-22 refrigerant and has a leak
  • You've paid for repairs several summers in a row
  • It can't keep up on 100°+ days, even after a tune-up
  • Your home has hot and cold rooms that never balance out
  • You're remodeling, adding on, or finishing a space

Our installation process

1. An in-home consultation

We measure your home, look at the windows, insulation, attic, and existing ductwork, and talk with you about what's bothering you now. Is the upstairs too hot? Is the system loud? Are allergies a concern? Your answers shape the recommendation.

2. A real load calculation

Bigger isn't better with air conditioning. An oversized system cools quickly but shuts off before it removes humidity, and it wears out faster from constant starts. We size the system to your home using an industry-standard load calculation.

3. Clear, written options

You'll get a written proposal with good, better, and best options where it makes sense, covering equipment, efficiency (SEER2) ratings, warranty coverage, and the total installed price. Financing and any available utility rebates are spelled out up front.

4. A clean, careful installation

We protect your floors and furniture, remove the old equipment, and install the new system with new line sets or a properly flushed existing set, a new pad if needed, a correctly sized drain, and secure electrical connections. Many installs also get a matched indoor coil and a new thermostat.

5. Commissioning and testing

We don't just turn it on and leave. We verify refrigerant charge, airflow, temperature split, and electrical readings, then walk you through your new thermostat and filter.

6. Permits, inspection, and HERS testing

California's Title 24 energy code requires a permit and, in most cases, third-party HERS verification (such as duct leakage testing) when you replace an air conditioner. We take care of the paperwork and scheduling so you're fully compliant. That matters when you sell your home.

Choosing the right type of system

SystemBest forGood to know
Central AC + gas furnaceHomes with gas and existing ductsThe most common setup in Elk Grove and Sacramento homes.
Heat pumpAll-electric homes, solar owners, lower heating billsHeats and cools with one outdoor unit. A great fit for our mild winters.
Variable-speed / inverterTwo-story homes, comfort seekersRuns longer at lower speed for steadier temperatures and quieter operation.
Ductless mini-splitAdditions, garages, homes without ductsRoom-by-room control with no ductwork needed.

Two-story homes and that hot upstairs

A lot of Elk Grove homes built in the 1990s and 2000s are two stories with one system in the attic. Heat rises, the attic bakes, and the upstairs bedrooms end up five to ten degrees warmer than downstairs. A replacement is the perfect time to fix that, whether it's a variable-speed system, zoning, better return air, or a separate ductless unit for the worst rooms. Ask us about it during your consultation.

Rebates and financing

High-efficiency systems and heat pumps may qualify for utility rebates or federal incentives, depending on current programs. We'll help you check what's available for your home. If you'd like to spread the cost out, we offer financing on approved credit.

AC installation questions

How long does an AC replacement take?

Most straightforward replacements in an existing home take one day. If we're changing the system type, moving equipment, or replacing ductwork at the same time, it can take two or three days. We'll give you a clear timeline before we start.

Do I need a permit to replace my air conditioner?

Yes. In California, replacing an AC or furnace requires a permit from your city or county, and most replacements also require third-party HERS testing under Title 24 energy rules. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and coordinate the testing for you.

What size AC do I need?

It depends on your home's square footage, insulation, windows, which way it faces, and ductwork, not just the size of the old unit. We do a proper load calculation so the new system isn't oversized (short cycling, poor humidity control) or undersized (running all day and still losing ground in July).

Should I get a heat pump instead of an AC?

For many homes in our area, yes, it's worth a serious look. A heat pump cools exactly like an AC and also heats your home efficiently in our mild winters. We'll price both options so you can compare. Learn more on our heat pump page.

Do you offer financing?

Yes, we offer financing on approved credit so you don't have to choose between comfort and your savings. See our financing page for details.

Will a new system lower my energy bill?

In most cases, yes. Especially if you're replacing a system that's 15 or more years old, the efficiency gain plus a correct installation (proper refrigerant charge, airflow, and sealed ducts) can make a noticeable difference on your SMUD bill.
