The part of your system you never see

Most homes in Elk Grove and Sacramento have ductwork running through the attic or crawlspace. Out of sight, those ducts take a beating: summer attic heat, rodents, pets, foot traffic from cable installers, and years of sagging.

Studies have found that the typical home loses a significant share of its heated and cooled air through leaks, gaps, and poorly connected ducts. That's money going straight into the attic, along with comfort problems and dust that comes back into your living space.

Signs of duct problems

  • Uneven temperaturesSome rooms are always too hot or cold.
  • Weak airflowBarely a breeze at certain vents.
  • A dusty houseLeaky returns pull in attic dust.
  • High energy billsThe system runs longer to make up for losses.
  • Whistling or rattlingNoisy, undersized, or loose ducts.
  • Visible damageTorn, crushed, or disconnected flex duct.

Our duct services

Inspection and diagnosis

We go into the attic or crawlspace and look at the actual condition of your ducts, connections, and insulation. Where it helps, we measure airflow and static pressure to understand how your system is really performing.

Duct repair and sealing

We reconnect disconnected runs, replace damaged sections, support sagging ducts, and seal leaky joints, boots, and plenums with mastic and proper tape, not the duct tape that dries out and falls off after a couple of summers.

Full duct replacement

When ducts are worn out or badly designed, we replace them with properly sized, well-insulated duct systems. It's often the perfect time to fix long-standing comfort problems by adding returns, resizing runs, or rebalancing airflow.

Airflow balancing and zoning

For homes with hot upstairs rooms or wings that never feel right, we can balance airflow with dampers or add a zoning system so different areas get conditioned on their own schedules.

HERS duct leakage testing

When you replace your AC or furnace, California code often requires duct leakage testing by a HERS rater. We make sure your ducts are ready to pass and coordinate the testing for you.

Two-story homes: If your upstairs is always warmer, the issue is often too little return air or ducts that weren't sized for the second floor. Small duct changes can make a surprisingly big difference.

Ductwork questions

How do I know if my ducts are leaking?

Common signs are rooms that never get comfortable, a dusty home, high energy bills, weak airflow at some vents, and a hot or dusty smell when the system starts. A duct leakage test gives a definite answer.

How long does ductwork last?

Flexible ducts in hot attics often last 15 to 25 years before the outer jacket breaks down and the inner liner tears or collapses. Metal ducts can last much longer, but joints and connections can still leak.

Do I need new ducts with a new AC?

Not always. If your ducts are in good shape, properly sized, and tested tight, we'll reuse them. If they're torn, crushed, undersized, or very leaky, replacing or repairing them at the same time often makes your new system perform dramatically better.

What is HERS duct testing?

California's Title 24 energy code often requires a third-party HERS rater to test duct leakage when an AC or furnace is replaced. We coordinate that testing as part of our installations so your permit can be closed out.

Can you fix rooms that are always too hot or too cold?

Usually, yes. Uneven temperatures often come from ductwork problems like undersized runs, disconnected ducts, too few returns, or poor balancing. We'll inspect and measure airflow to find the cause.

Too hot, too cold, or just not right?

Call HUG Heat & Air. A real person will answer, and we'll get someone out to take care of it.
