How a heat pump works

A heat pump looks just like a central air conditioner, and in summer it works exactly like one, moving heat from inside your house to the outside. In winter it simply runs in reverse, pulling heat from the outdoor air and bringing it inside.

Because it moves heat instead of burning fuel to create it, a heat pump can deliver two to three times more heat energy than the electricity it uses. That's why heat pumps are so efficient in a place like ours, where winter days usually sit in the 40s and 50s.

Why heat pumps make sense here

  • Our climate is ideal. Mild winters mean the heat pump stays in its most efficient range most of the year.
  • One system, two jobs. Replace your aging AC and furnace with a single outdoor unit and indoor air handler.
  • Pairs well with solar. If you have rooftop solar, a heat pump lets your panels help with heating too.
  • No combustion in the home. No flame, no flue, and no carbon monoxide risk from your heating system.
  • Comfortable, even heat. Variable-speed models run steadily at low power for fewer temperature swings.
  • Possible rebates. Heat pumps often qualify for utility and federal incentives.

Heat pump options we install

Central ducted heat pumps

The most common choice when you already have ductwork. The outdoor unit connects to an indoor air handler or a furnace (for dual fuel), and air is delivered through your existing ducts. We'll evaluate those ducts first, because a high-efficiency system on leaky ducts won't deliver what you paid for.

Dual-fuel systems

A heat pump paired with a gas furnace. The heat pump does most of the work, and the furnace kicks in during the coldest hours. Good for homeowners who want efficiency but aren't ready to give up gas.

Ductless heat pumps (mini-splits)

Perfect for homes without ductwork, room additions, converted garages, or that one room that never gets comfortable. See our ductless mini-split page for more.

Heat pump repair

Heat pumps have a few parts that standard air conditioners don't, like a reversing valve, defrost controls, and auxiliary heat strips. When something goes wrong, symptoms can be confusing. We repair heat pumps of every major brand and commonly fix:

  • Cold air in heat mode, or warm air in cool mode (often the reversing valve or its solenoid)
  • Outdoor unit iced over and not defrosting
  • Auxiliary or emergency heat running constantly, causing high electric bills
  • Short cycling, noisy operation, or tripped breakers
  • Refrigerant leaks and failed capacitors, contactors, or fan motors
  • Thermostat setup problems, which are surprisingly common with heat pumps

About rebates: heat pump incentives through SMUD and federal programs change from year to year. During your estimate, we'll help you understand what may apply to your system and what paperwork you'll need.

Heat pump questions

Do heat pumps work when it's cold?

Yes. Modern heat pumps heat efficiently well below freezing, and Elk Grove and Sacramento rarely get much colder than the high 20s or low 30s. Our climate is close to ideal for heat pumps.

Why does my heat pump blow steam or go quiet in winter?

That's usually the defrost cycle. On cold, damp mornings, frost builds on the outdoor coil, and the system briefly reverses to melt it. A little steam and a pause are normal. If the outdoor unit is covered in thick ice that doesn't clear, call us.

Will a heat pump lower my energy bills?

For many homes, yes, especially compared to an older gas furnace and AC, and especially if you have rooftop solar. Results depend on your home, your rates, and the system you choose. We'll give you an honest estimate rather than a sales pitch.

Are there rebates for heat pumps?

Heat pumps are often eligible for utility rebates and federal incentives, but programs change frequently. We'll help you check what's currently available through SMUD and other programs for your specific system.

What is a dual-fuel system?

A dual-fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles cooling and most heating, and the furnace takes over on the coldest mornings. It's a nice option if you want efficiency but like having gas heat as a backup.
