A furnace that fits your home and your budget
Replacing a furnace isn't something most people do more than once or twice in their lives, so it's normal not to know where to start. We'll walk you through it step by step.
We start by looking at your home and how you use it: square footage, insulation, ductwork, where the furnace lives (hall closet, garage, or attic), and whether any rooms run cold. Then we recommend a furnace that's sized correctly and give you options for efficiency and comfort features, with clear pricing on each.
Signs it's time to replace your furnace
- It's 18-20+ years old and needs a costly repair
- A technician found a cracked heat exchanger
- Your gas bills keep rising with similar weather
- It's loud, cycles constantly, or some rooms never warm up
- You're replacing your AC and want matched equipment
- You're considering going all-electric with a heat pump
Understanding your options
Standard efficiency (80% AFUE)
A solid, budget-friendly choice for our mild climate, especially when the furnace is in an attic or garage and existing venting can be reused. Because we don't need a lot of heating hours here, an 80% furnace is often the most cost-effective option.
High efficiency (95%+ AFUE)
Condensing furnaces capture extra heat from exhaust gases, so more of your gas dollar ends up as warmth. They need PVC venting and a condensate drain, which we plan for during the estimate. A good choice if you run the heat a lot or plan to stay in the home long-term.
Two-stage and variable-speed
Instead of blasting at full power and shutting off, these furnaces run on a lower setting most of the time. You get more even temperatures, quieter operation, and better air filtration because air is moving through the filter longer.
What's included in a HUG furnace installation
- Load calculation and equipment selection
- Removal and disposal of your old furnace
- New gas connection with shutoff and sediment trap, tested for leaks
- Venting inspected and updated to code and manufacturer requirements
- Condensate drain and pan for high-efficiency and attic installs
- Transitions sealed to your existing ductwork
- Gas pressure, temperature rise, and combustion checks
- Carbon monoxide testing and safety control verification
- City or county permit and final inspection
- A walkthrough of your new system, thermostat, and filter
Thinking about electrification? If you have solar or want to move away from gas, a heat pump can replace both your furnace and AC. We're happy to price a furnace and a heat pump side by side so you can compare.
Financing your new furnace
Furnaces have a way of failing at the worst possible time. If you need to replace yours before you planned to, financing on approved credit can make it manageable.
Furnace installation questions
How long does a furnace last in the Sacramento area?
Because our winters are mild, gas furnaces here often last 18 to 25 years with regular maintenance. Lack of maintenance, poor airflow, and incorrect sizing are what shorten that lifespan.
Should I replace my furnace and AC at the same time?
If both are near the same age, replacing them together usually saves money on labor and ensures the indoor coil, blower, and outdoor unit are properly matched for efficiency. If only one is failing and the other is fairly new, we'll tell you it's fine to replace just one.
What does AFUE mean?
AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) tells you how much of the gas you buy becomes heat in your home. An 80% AFUE furnace turns 80 cents of every gas dollar into heat. A 96% furnace turns 96 cents into heat. We'll help you decide whether the higher-efficiency option pays off for your home and how long you plan to stay.
Can my furnace go in the attic?
Many Elk Grove and Sacramento homes already have the furnace in the attic, and that's fine when it's installed properly. We pay close attention to platform support, drain pans, condensate routing, service access, and venting clearances for attic installs.
Is a heat pump better than a new furnace?
It depends on your home, your utility rates, and whether you have solar. Heat pumps are very efficient in our mild climate and replace both your AC and furnace. Many homeowners pair a heat pump with a gas furnace as backup (a dual-fuel system). We'll price the options side by side.
