Your HVAC system is your home's lungs

Every bit of air in your home passes through your heating and cooling system several times a day. That makes it the best place to clean that air.

Sacramento regularly ranks among the most challenging regions in the country for allergies, and smoke from California wildfires can push outdoor air quality into the unhealthy range for days or weeks at a time. A few smart upgrades to your system can make a real difference for your family, especially for kids, older adults, and anyone with asthma or allergies.

Common indoor air problems we solve

  • Wildfire smokeSmoky smell and haze that gets inside.
  • AllergiesPollen, pet dander, and dust mites.
  • Constant dustSurfaces dusty a day after cleaning.
  • Dry winter airDry skin, static, and scratchy throats.
  • Musty odorsOften from a dirty coil or drain pan.
  • Stale, stuffy roomsTight homes that need fresh air.

Solutions we offer

Better filtration

The single most effective upgrade for most homes. We can install a 4- or 5-inch media filter cabinet that holds a high-efficiency filter (up to MERV 13 or higher, depending on your system) without choking airflow. These filters capture far more fine particles, including smoke, than standard 1-inch filters, and they last much longer.

Whole-home air purifiers

Installed in your ductwork, these systems work alongside filtration to reduce airborne particles, odors, and some microbes throughout the whole house, quietly and without portable units in every room.

UV germicidal lights

Mounted near your indoor coil, UV lights help keep the coil and drain pan clean and free of mold growth. That helps with musty smells and keeps your system running efficiently.

Humidity control

Our winters can be surprisingly dry indoors once the heat is running. A whole-home humidifier adds just the right amount of moisture, which helps with comfort, static, and dry sinuses.

Fresh air ventilation

Newer, tighter homes can trap stale air, cooking odors, and moisture. Energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) bring in filtered fresh air while recovering energy from the outgoing air.

Duct cleaning and sealing

Leaky return ducts in a dusty attic can pull insulation fibers and dirt straight into your living space. Sealing those leaks is often the hidden fix for a dusty home. See our ductwork services.

Our approach: we start by checking your system's airflow, filter setup, and ductwork. Then we recommend the few upgrades that will actually make a difference in your home, and skip the ones that won't.

Smoke season tips

  • Keep windows and doors closed when the air quality index is high.
  • Switch to a MERV 13 filter if your system can handle it, and check it weekly during heavy smoke.
  • Set your thermostat fan to "On" to keep air moving through the filter.
  • If your system has a fresh-air intake or economizer, ask us about closing it during smoke events.
  • Consider a portable HEPA purifier for bedrooms as an extra layer of protection.

Indoor air quality questions

What's the best air filter for wildfire smoke?

A MERV 13 filter is the usual recommendation for smoke, as long as your system can move enough air through it. Many systems need a deeper 4- or 5-inch media cabinet to use MERV 13 without restricting airflow. We can check your system and upgrade the filter housing if needed.

Can a high-MERV filter hurt my system?

It can if the system wasn't designed for it. A thin, high-MERV filter can restrict airflow, freeze the AC coil, or overheat the furnace. That's why we measure static pressure before recommending a filter upgrade.

Should I run my HVAC fan during smoke events?

Running the fan in 'On' mode with a good filter can help clean indoor air, as long as outdoor air isn't being pulled in. Keep windows and doors closed, and check your filter more often. It can load up fast during heavy smoke.

Do UV lights really work?

UV lights installed near the indoor coil are effective at keeping the coil and drain pan free of mold and bacterial growth, which can help with musty odors and coil efficiency. They're a supplement to good filtration, not a replacement.

How do I know if my home has poor air quality?

Common signs include lingering dust shortly after cleaning, allergy symptoms that are worse indoors, musty or stale odors, stuffy rooms, and headaches. We can assess your system and suggest practical improvements.
