What is a ductless mini-split?

A mini-split is a small heat pump with two parts: a compact outdoor unit and one or more indoor units mounted on the wall or ceiling. They're connected by a small line set through a three-inch hole. No ducts, no major construction, and every room gets its own thermostat.

Because there are no ducts to leak, and because inverter compressors speed up and slow down to match what the room needs, mini-splits are some of the most efficient systems on the market.

Where mini-splits shine

  • Room additions and remodels
  • Garage conversions and home gyms
  • ADUs and in-law units
  • Older homes without ductwork
  • Hot upstairs bedrooms and bonus rooms
  • Home offices and sunrooms
  • Workshops and studios
  • Server rooms and small offices

A smart fix for older Sacramento homes

Many of the beautiful 1920s-1950s homes in Land Park, Curtis Park, East Sacramento, and Tahoe Park were built without central air, or have small, aging ducts squeezed into a tight crawlspace. Running new ductwork through plaster walls is messy and expensive. A multi-zone ductless system can bring modern comfort to these homes while protecting their character.

Fixing the "hot room" problem

If you live in a two-story home in Elk Grove, you probably know the routine: downstairs is fine, but the bedrooms over the garage are miserable by 4 p.m. Instead of overcooling the whole house to make one room bearable, a single ductless unit can handle that room on its own. It's often the most cost-effective fix we can offer.

Our mini-split installation

  1. Site visit. We look at the rooms, measure, and talk about where you'd like the indoor units to go.
  2. Sizing and design. Each zone is sized for its room, so it's not too big or too small, and we plan neat line set routes and condensate drainage.
  3. Clean installation. Wall penetrations are sealed, line sets are covered with tidy line-hide where visible, and the outdoor unit is set on a pad or wall bracket.
  4. Vacuum and commissioning. We pull a deep vacuum, test for leaks, verify operation in heating and cooling, and show you how to use the remote or app.

Mini-split repair and cleaning

Is the unit blinking an error code, dripping water, blowing weak air, or smelling musty? We repair and service ductless systems from all major manufacturers. A deep cleaning of the indoor coil and blower wheel often solves odor and airflow problems that a filter rinse can't.

Ductless mini-split questions

How many indoor units can one outdoor unit run?

Single-zone systems pair one outdoor unit with one indoor unit. Multi-zone systems can run two to five or more indoor units from one outdoor unit, depending on the model. We'll recommend the setup that fits your floor plan and budget.

Do mini-splits heat as well as cool?

Yes. Nearly all ductless systems are heat pumps, so they heat and cool. In our climate, they can be the only heat source for a room or ADU.

Are mini-splits noisy?

No, they're among the quietest systems you can buy. Indoor units are often around the volume of a whisper on low speed, and outdoor units are quieter than most central AC condensers.

How much wall space does a mini-split need?

Wall-mounted units are typically about 30 to 40 inches wide and sit high on the wall. If you'd rather not see a wall unit, there are ceiling cassettes and slim ducted options for some spaces.

How often do mini-splits need cleaning?

Rinse or vacuum the indoor filters every month or two during heavy use. We recommend a professional cleaning and check-up once a year to keep the coil and blower wheel clean and prevent musty smells.
